After just a couple of weeks since being delisted, the “controversial” The Coffin of Andy and Leyley is once again available in Australia with a newly revised rating classification.
We reported on January 18th how the indie developed RPG Maker game known as “The Coffin of Andy and Leyley” was outright delisted from purchase from the Steam store if your account was set to Australia.
Considering how the horror game as a whole features themes such as cannibalism and implied incest, I was more or less baffled by how the game received a General (all ages) classification.
From the beginning the game as a whole has been surrounded in controversy, mainly due to retards on social media seemingly getting offended by material they simply do not like, and rather than ignore it and look elsewhere they insisted that the small time indie game be banned / removed entirely.
Of course their main reasoning behind their cancel culture tirade was simply due to the fact that the game features notions of incestuous relations between brother and sister.
I’ve already glossed over this game to such great extent already, the HORROR game depicts troubling and or unorthodox themes and values, go figure. Surprisingly, this wasn’t enough to prevent backlash, despite the fact that the game doesn’t actually depict any incestuous relations. Instead, it presents a potential future resulting from the protagonist’s continued involvement in a destructive relationship with his psychopathic sister.
Nevertheless it’s not as if online social warriors were actually going to play the fucking game to understand that their arguments are completely unfounded anyway, they merely see the word incest and then start screeching for the game to be canceled alongside anybody who doesn’t adhere to their sick and twisted “morally righteous” viewpoint.
So they doxed the creator, because that’s a normal thing to do if you simply don’t like the contents of a game somebody made.
Thankfully the whole scare and ordeal just propelled the game further, what would’ve been an extremely niche indie title developed with RPG Maker had now become some sort of internet sensation entirely thanks to the controversy.
Again, it just goes to show that it’s often best for these people to simply shut the hell up to avoid giving focus and attention towards the entity that they simply despise, they will never learn.
Nevertheless, the developer thankfully didn’t yield to pressure stemming from a doxing scandal instigated by nefarious dickheads. Instead, they transferred the game’s legal responsibilities to a third party and shared some details about future updates through a devlog post on Steam.
When the game was removed my first thoughts upon witnessing the General rating was simply due to the fact that the game had received an incorrect assessment, given the contents of the game I believe a rating along the cusp of MA 15+ would have been the correct decision.
The Australian Classification system can be hypocritical at the best of times. Our government tends to treat citizens as innocent babies, banning games for featuring themes of recreational drugs or simply for being deemed “too violent.”
Other games, like Rimworld, faced temporary bans before being reinstated following classification adjustments. Now, The Coffin of Andy and Leyley is once again available for purchase with an R18+ rating.
The truth is, the game was never truly “banned” from the start. Instead, it was temporarily removed from sale while awaiting a reclassification. Now, it’s back on the Steam store in Australia with an R18+ rating, equivalent to the ESRB’s Mature rating. This corrects the earlier incorrect classification of General/Everyone which the game certainly didn’t deserve.
