Publisher Rainy Frog and solo developer Rainy Night Creations have announced “Spy Drops” for the Switch and PC. This retro-themed 3D stealth-action game is very reminiscent of 1998’s Metal Gear Solid, featuring randomly generated levels.
In “Spy Drops,” you play as a member of the eponymous Spy Drops team, a counter-terrorist organization tasked with stopping an eco-terrorist group from wiping out all digital records and sending the world back to the Stone Age. What starts as a straightforward mission quickly becomes more complex, leading you to question your mission objectives and uncover a deeper conspiracy, much like in Deus Ex.
Visually and gameplay-wise, if you experienced Metal Gear Solid, you’ll have a good idea of what to expect with Spy Drops. It’s a low-poly, jaggy top-down 3D stealth-action game emphasizing remaining undetected and using non-lethal methods to handle guards. Notably, you’ll play as a female protagonist, a waifu to surpass Metal Gear, perhaps.
Unlike Metal Gear, Spy Drops features randomly-generated levels and mission objectives. While it may lack the iconic level design of Metal Gear, the random generation adds an element of unpredictability, ensuring no two objectives are ever truly the same.
To complete your missions, you’ll have access to various gadgets, including drones, night vision goggles, mine detectors, and more, allowing for diverse approaches to each mission.
You can choose which equipment to take into each mission, ranging from gadgets like drones or night vision goggles to weapons such as sniper rifles or tasers. You’ll have the choice to avoid or destroy enemy cameras, pacify guards, or kill them, though extracting intel from dead guards is impossible.
As you gain experience points, you can level up attributes such as maximum health, stamina, and accuracy, providing a standard but satisfying progression system. Interestingly, the Steam store listing mentions the use of AI-generated assets for icons and dialogue audio, Spy Drops will also feature a head-to-head multiplayer mode.
Spy Drops doesn’t have a release date yet, but when it arrives it will do so on both the PC and Nintendo Switch platforms, it could very well be a worthwhile experience reminiscent of Metal Gear Solid.
