This will undoubtedly come as a shock to absolutely nobody, but WayForward have announced that their upcoming Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution will also be launching on modern platforms such as the Sony PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 alongside Nintendo’s Switch console as well as a PC release via Steam.
Led by the original design team consisting of Shantae creator Erin Bozon, series director Matt Bozon, and programmer Michael Stragey, Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution serves as a direct sequel to the beloved original Shantae game released in 2002. Developers WayForward decided to unscrap the project and continue its development after being abandoned for almost two decades, with the game having been announced for an early 2024 release on the Game Boy Advance.
In this engaging action-adventure featuring hair-whipping and belly-dancing, Shantae’s arch-nemesis, the cunning pirate Risky Boots, hatches a “groundbreaking” plan to upheave Sequin Land by rotating the continent, she aims to relocate any town to the coast for easy plundering. As players assume the role of Shantae, they must counter Risky’s strategy by manipulating the very landscape itself, navigating through mix-and-match multilayered levels with foreground and background interactions.
Yes, I genuinely mean that when I say for the Game Boy Advance.
It’s a very loving gesture from a devoted and kindhearted developer, bringing a canceled sequel back to life after Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution was left to gather dust for over an entire decade, soon to be completely playable on native hardware as well as modern systems because of course it would release on modern systems.
Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution marks the sixth installment in the niche yet beloved Shantae series which has sold several million units across its entire lifespan, with WayForward being one of the few American based developers who have yet to kneel before woke censorship ideologies to appease sensitive individuals, Shantae never did garner much attention from gamers but it has continued to grow in such a way that its niche remains a niche yet grows naturally.
Hopefully it remains like that.
Because WayForward are one in a million, they actually give a shit about preservation their old work, they’ve ported the original Shantae from the GBC to the Nintendo Switch and eventually Sony PlayStation systems, while a PC release remains to be seen emulation is more than acceptable, every game in the Shantae series can now be played on modern hardware.
And now they’re reviving a canceled sequel after almost two entire decades, kudos WayForward. Fucking kudos.
Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution will now sport digital releases for all modern platforms barring Microsoft’s XBOX system, but if you’re a devoted fan you can still opt to receive a physical copy of Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution via Limited Run Games sometime next year as additional information and more specifically an actual launch date are still up in the air.
