Indie developers Serious Sim, has unveiled a gameplay introduction video for their upcoming driving game “Heading Out,” slated for release on May 8th.
Serious Sim gained recognition primarily through their 2019 release, “Radio Commander.” This title offers a distinctive approach to the RTS genre, putting players in the command of troops during the Vietnam War. With a mostly positive reception, it holds a 73% rating from 1,474 reviews on Steam.
‘Heading Out’ represents a significant departure for Serious Sim. The game evokes the spirit of beloved 70s and 80s action films like ‘Vanishing Point.’ Players assume the role of a wanted fugitive driving a period-correct American muscle car, racing through American highways while evading the pursuit of law enforcement.
The game also adopts a roguelike approach, ensuring each playthrough is unique. Players must maintain their focus level, monitor their car’s condition and finances while navigating the roads under police pursuit. Engage in diverse activities like street races and fulfilling quests for encountered characters.
Every strategic choice affects different aspects, including interactions with characters, radio commentary on the protagonist, fuel usage, car condition, and of course your wanted level.
It’s evident that the driving mechanics aren’t the main draw of Heading Out, and frankly, they don’t need to be. The game is brimming with charm and character, offering frequent changes in scenery and objectives. Notably, its distinctive grayscale aesthetic punctuated by selective bursts of color which is complemented well by its cell-shaded graphics.
Serious Sim is clearly aiming to exceed expectations with the personality of this game which is set for release on Steam on May 8th.
