It has been formally announced that the rice farming action RPG “Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin” has exceeded worldwide sales totaling 1.5 million copies, a phenomenal achievement for the small Japanese outfit, Edelweiss who initially projected the sale of only 30,000 copies.
To mark the milestone, TOHO Animation revealed that an official anime adaptation of Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin is in production by P.A. Works and is scheduled to premiere later this year.
The voice actors have been announced, with Naomi Oozora voicing Sakuna Hime and Rika Kinugawa voicing Kokorowa Hime, indicating that the same voice actors from the game will be returning.
Comments from Mr. Naru and Mr. Koichi are also available on the official website.
Additionally, the anime’s official Twitter account is running a campaign to distribute teaser visual posters.
Released in November 2020 for the Nintendo Switch, Sony PlayStation 4 and the PC, the game reached the one million milestone by June 2021. Its protagonist, Sakuna Hime, is a deity born to a prosperous god and a war god.
Despite squandering her parents’ wealth in the divine capital, she embarks on a journey to the island of Hinoe, ruled by demons, for a specific purpose, to tame both the demons that inhabit the island and the soil.
Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin” intertwines side-scrolling action with intricate crafting and rice farming cultivation, presenting a compelling narrative about discovering one’s purpose in the world.
Players experience a realistic simulation of rice cultivation that faithfully captures Japan’s traditional farming methods. As seasons shift, players take control of the adorable goddess of prosperity to manage every step of rice cultivation, from planting to harvesting. You will gain strength from the success of rice cultivation to assist with exploration and the defeat of more demons.
It’s an earnest little game that has surpassed all expectations, and now it would appear that the profits generated from its immense success have been distributed into expanding onto TV screens with an anime adaptation, I for one hope that this potentially means that a sequel is coming in the distant future.
