Despite suffering a massive data breach alongside a large-scale cyber attack that took down multiple of their websites for nearly a month, Kadokawa is pressing forward by announcing the release window for the mobile game Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World: Witch’s Re:surrection.
The game, which celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Re:Zero novel, will be available for iOS and Android devices. It is set to release this summer exclusively in Japan, with pre-registrations already open.
Re:Zero Witch’s Resurrection offers an RPG experience with a vast field of familiar characters from the series, with eight in total all with their own unique rolls. The main protagonist in Subaru for instance is portrayed as a defensive tank whereas the demon sisters of Rem and Ram serve as a dedicated healer and magic supporter respectively.
More characters will undoubtedly be added in the future as an incentive for players to invest money to obtain them.
The game is supposedly supervised by the original author Tappei Nagatsuki, it features a new story centered around the resurrection of the witch, as suggested by its name. Witch’s Resurrection will play like a traditional RPG where players control the party leader to traverse fields, clear quests, and fight monsters in turn-based battles.
While mobile devices have significantly advanced in terms of technological capabilities over the years, from my perspective, this looks like your run-of-the-mill 3D RPG. It will certainly try to lure you in with its cutesy character models but may ultimately go defunct the following year.
The battle attack animations in Re:Zero Witch’s Re:surrection look rather subpar, and the game in general appears overly simplistic and lacking in vibrancy. If you truly want to immerse yourself in the life of Subaru Natsuki, and by saying that I mean a man who continually dies only to restart from a previous point, you’ll be glad to know there are numerous gacha games based on the Re:Zero franchise.
Re:Zero Lost in Memories, developed by SEGA, was another gacha game based on the popular Re:Zero franchise. It released on September 9th, 2020, and was ultimately terminated on May 12th, 2023. Considering the fate of many run-of-the-mill games based on popular anime IP.
Lasting three years is quite an achievement, however as of late there have been collaborations between Re:Zero and other gacha games, such as Goddess of Victory: NIKKE, KonoSuba, Crusaders Quest, AFK Arena and Puyo Puyo.
Kadokawa revealed the first teaser trailer for Re:Zero Witch’s Resurrection back in March 2023. It took over a year for the company to confirm a release window, which doesn’t exactly spark much enthusiasm for its upcoming release in Japan this summer.
Adding to the anticipation is Kadokawa’s proactive lottery campaign for pre-registrations in Japan. Players who pre-register can compete for a complete series Blu-ray boxset or manga, with the quality of prizes improving as more people enter.
Additionally, participants will have the chance to compete for an acrylic stand of series staple Emilia. The game is running a social campaign to increase the size of this acrylic stand by 0.01 cm for every repost, and as of July 1st, the anticipated size has already exceeded 180 cm, which is sure to make one lucky fan extremely happy.
This game seems to be a means of wasting time, enveloping yourself with basic 3D animation and low poly 3D landscapes reminiscent of iconic places throughout the Re:Zero franchise, such as Roswaal’s Mansion. The game will likely feature visual novel cutscenes. It doesn’t look particularly exceptional or outstanding, serving instead to siphon money from dedicated fans of Re:Zero it will likely succeed in doing so during its initial launch phases and will likely fizzle out after a year or two just as all those which have come before it.
