Sakis 25, an indie developer from Greece with nearly 20 years of experience, expressed his surprise and gratitude for reaching over 30,000 wishlist registrations in just three months. According to recent Steam news, the game is slated for a summer 2024 release, with a demo debuting at the Steam Next Fest in June.
“Old School Rally” is an arcade-style rally game that lives up to its name. This retro rally title features low-poly PSX graphics and aims to deliver thrilling races with royalty-free renditions of iconic rally cars spanning decades.
The game strives to evoke nostalgia for a simpler era when rally games like the early Colin McRae Rally titles, V-Rally, and Sega Rally were thrilling and fun.
Old School Rally is expected to feature a variety of large-scale courses from around the world. For instance, the original Colin McRae Rally, released in 1998, featured 52 rally stages across eight locations such as the UK, New Zealand, Corsica, Greece, and Monte Carlo. Similarly, V-Rally 2 included 72 distinct stages across 12 different locations.
The game is set to launch in early access on Steam in Summer 2024. While I typically advise against purchasing titles before their full release, the developers assure us that the early access period will span 6-10 months, with no change in price upon full release.
I sincerely hope that Old School Rally isn’t solely relying on nostalgia. As a modern title with a retro aesthetic, it should prioritize smooth controls, a high FPS cap, and expand upon the features of games it takes influence from by offering a plethora of courses, cars and locations.
Notably, titles like V-Rally 2 even included a custom course maker. To surpass mere emulation of older games, Old School Rally must truly impress consumers and demonstrate that it’s worth investing in.
