Mahjong Soul, an anime themed Japanese riichi mahjong browser game, developed by “Cat Food Studio” a Chinese outfit, have initiated a limited-time collaboration with the Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya Movie Licht Nameless Girl from TYPE-MOON’s globally recognized Fate franchise.
In this collaboration, four beloved characters such as Illya, Miyu, Kuro, and Gil will make their debut in the game, showcasing their unique attire and adding a little bit of iconic Japanese flair to the Chinese developed Japanese mahjong mobile / browser game.
At this point I’m fairly certain that the Chinese and Koreans have essentially swallowed up Japan, utilizing their intellectual property to boost their own popularity and increase monthly revenue figures.
Moreover, for a limited duration, players can indulge in five exclusive decorations, a novel gameplay mode influenced by mahjong, a distinctive storyline woven into the collaboration, and a plethora of event-specific rewards, enhancing the overall gaming experience.
The highly anticipated collaborative event, titled the Holy Mahjong War, is set to take place from November 14th to December 5th, 2023 (UTC-7).
Illya, a beloved figure from the Fate series, began as a regular 5th-grade student but was tricked by Magical Ruby, transforming her into a magical girl. Miyu, another magical girl bound by a contract with Magical Sapphire, shares an unbreakable bond with Illya.
Kuro, a character created by Illya, relies on mana absorption by kissing Illya to avoid fading away. Gil, a partial incarnation of Gilgamesh and the Heroic Spirit within the eighth Class Card, wields The Gate of Babylon, housing an infinite array of Noble Phantasms.
In this crossover storyline, the newly amalgamated personas Illya, Miyu, Kuro, and Gil suddenly find themselves transported to the Mahjong Soul Shrine within the Mahjong Soul realm.
This unforeseen visit unfolds opportunities for them to engage with the native characters of Mahjong Soul through mahjong matches as seen from the footage above.
It’s a rather care free game for the more intellectual fella, there’s certainly a lot of worse titles out there and if you’re one for playing mahjong the anime flares and themes certainly give it a much needed boost in fanfare and appeal.
The collaborative event also introduces The Prism Live Series Outfits, showcasing stunning stage costumes designed for the four featured characters from Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya Movie Licht Nameless Girl.
Each character will be adorned in captivating attire suitable for the stage. Furthermore, this update brings forth a selection of collaborative decorations inspired by elements from the movie, encompassing Winning, Riichi, Riichi Bet, Tile Back, and Tablecloth.
Players of Mahjong Soul can now immerse themselves in the brand-new game mode titled “Incantation Clash”.
This innovative approach disrupts the traditional rules of mahjong games, as both hand-discarded and drawn-discarded tiles will be transparently displayed for all participants.
The cumulative count of these two discard types will impact the winner’s point total. Through participation in either ranked matches or Incantation Clash showdowns, players can acquire event tokens. Upon reaching specific token milestones, they become eligible for unique rewards.
Mahjong Soul like every other single mobile oriented game is yet another gacha game that provides pretty women in exchange for either grinding out and playing the game on a frequent basis or by paying real life currency to pull for new characters.
Promotions like this increase player retention and incite new players who simply like the characters of the franchises featured in these collabs, the gacha mechanics inside Mahjong Soul aren’t like other titles, mainly because of the lack in variety of characters so the intention is to decrease the amount of summons a player typically is capable of doing at least if they were freeloaders.
Playing the game you’ll receive “gifts” through events or you can purchase them in the game’s shop using copper coins, these are then stored in your inventory.
These gifts can be used to level up characters, as a free-to-play player it’s encouraged for you to use them on the two default characters provided but obviously since everyone desires unique characters, as an alternative you can “donate” these gifts, converting them into what’s called “dust”.
On a monthly basis, you can acquire up to 5 summoning scrolls which can be purchased for 50 dust each. With each summon, you receive an item (potentially a character if you’re fortunate) and earn a unit of a specific currency called “Faith”.
When you accumulate a significant amount of this illusive currency you can then exchange it for any desired character, but it costs 150 Faith to redeem a non-special character of your choosing, to simply garner 150 faith from the in-game redeem system alone it would take you well over two years to accumulate enough.
The only way to ensure that you’re actually capable of summoning a character, especially one that you want you’re basically forced into feeding the beast and coughing up your wallet, Mahjong Soul is quite possibly one of the most excruciating and slowest earning gacha games in existence, if you’re a free-to-play player it excruciating to garner up enough scrolls and faith to actually get the character(s) you want.
If you’re just starting out chances are basically zero that you’re going to actually obtain any prolific character from this collaboration so don’t get your hopes up.
However for those who respect the grind now is your time to hopefully grab yourself Illya and Kuro (Chloe) before they’re gone on December 5th.
