Publishers Aniplex and developers Pokelabo and f4samurai have announced that the upcoming release of “Puella Magi Madoka Magica Magia Exedra” will be available not only for mobile devices but also on PC, both in Japan and the West.
The game is scheduled for release sometime in 2024, and a Steam store page is already live.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Magia Exedra brings together beloved characters from the iconic anime series “Puella Magi Madoka Magica” in a captivating 3D battle RPG. Developed with original concepts by Gekidan Inu Curry (Doroinu), the game features an all-new storyline where players enter the Lighthouse, a realm of Magical Memories.
In this realm, a girl who has lost everything relives the pivotal moments of countless magical girls, hoping to recover her own lost memories. This unique setting allows fans to experience the emotional depth and intricate backstories of the series’ characters in a 3D world.
Players will explore labyrinthine Witch Hunts, guiding teams of up to five magical girls through challenging stages and battling formidable bosses. Having five party members is crucial, especially considering this is a gacha game that features in-game purchases. As more party members become available, players are incentivized to pull for additional characters to enhance their progress and success in the game.
Much like other battle-based RPG gacha games, the combat system emphasizes strategic team formation with a focus on matching corresponding elements to deal maximum damage through command-based mechanics. It’s reminiscent of Honkai Star Rail but with an extra character slot, offering more opportunities for strategic play and, of course, maximizing potential in-game purchases.
As players navigate these treacherous labyrinths, they collect vital items and memories, enhancing their teams and uncovering the rich lore of the Puella Magi universe.
“Puella Magi Madoka Magica” being an original anime project created by the Magica Quartet (Akiyuki Shinbo, Ume Aoki, Gen Urobuchi, and producer Atsuhiro Iwakami). The first anime adaptation premiered in January 2011 and ran until April of the same year. With well over 750,000 reviews on MyAnimeList, the series gained acclaim for its dark and deconstructive take on the magical girl genre and has lots of fans worldwide.
The story centers around Madoka Kaname, a middle school girl who encounters a mysterious creature named Kyubey. Kyubey offers Madoka and her friend Sayaka Miki a contract: in exchange for granting any one of their wishes, they must become magical girls tasked with fighting witches, malevolent entities born from curses. As the girls learn more about the true nature of witches and the fate of magical girls, they face increasingly grim and complex moral dilemmas.
The series has spawned multiple manga adaptations and spin-offs, a novel by Nitroplus, a dedicated magazine, and several video games. Now, it is set to make a major splash with a 3D gacha game for mobile devices and PC. Two recap movies were released in October 2012, followed by a third movie, titled “Rebellion,” in October 2013. “Rebellion” featured a new original story and serves as a prequel to “Walpurgisnacht.”
Despite its niche appeal, I think this game will still be a hit. The combat system, which looks similar to miHoYo’s “Honkai Star Rail,” looks crisp and engaging enough. Based on the popular franchise, it should provide plenty of entertainment for Madoka Magica fans globally when it releases this year, in the meantime you can refer to the official website.
