Fans of the DanMachi (Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?) franchise have a double treat in store as an official announcement made at GAFES 2024 has revealed that the fifth season of the anime adaptation will premiere on television during the Fall season of 2024.
That wasn’t the only announcement made at the event as it was also revealed that the entire Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? literary franchise has now surpassed an impressive 17 million copies in circulation. This includes both the original light novel volumes and their respective manga adaptations.
For those unfamiliar, the light novel DanMachi, also known as “Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka (Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?)”, is penned by Fujino Omori and illustrated by Suzuhito Yasuda. The series debuted under the GA Bunko imprint of SB Creative Publishing in January 2013.
The manga adaptation by Kunieda debuted in the Young Gangan magazine of Square Enix publishing house in August 2013.
However, it wasn’t until April 4, 2015 where the franchise really took its stride, when DanMachi premiered its first anime adaptation. Since then, it has spanned a total of 4 seasons (52 episodes in total), 1 movie, and 3 OVAs and has accumulated many fans the world over, myself included.
Furthermore, the animation studio J.C. Staff was responsible for the production of the series, with Yoshiki Yamakawa directing the first season and Hideki Tachibana directing the subsequent seasons.
For the fifth season of the anime series, the voice cast remains unchanged while the production team will consist of Hideki Tachibana as the director. Animation studio J.C. Staff is handling the production. DanMachi author Fujino Omori and Hideki Shirane will oversee the script composition, while Shigeki Kimoto is responsible for character design.
This latest installment of the series is titled “Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka V: Houjou no Megami-hen” or “DanMachi V” for short.
The secondary news concerning the franchise focuses on its gaming adaptations, a realm where DanMachi has seen its fair share of titles. Among these are mobile games like DanMachi BATTLE CHRONICLE, which curiously received a PlayStation port just a month ago, and DanMachi MEMORIA FREESE, whose international servers were terminated on December 28th, 2023.
Unfortunately, fans have yet to see a proper game adaptation of the franchise. Considering the series’ plot and premise, a well-executed adaptation could result in a straightforward yet enjoyable dungeon-crawling JRPG, offering ample fan service akin to KonoSuba and its numerous game adaptations.
To kick off the new year, Bushiroad Games made a significant announcement by unveiling new game trailers for upcoming titles and introducing new games. Among them is a genuine game adaptation of the DanMachi franchise titled “Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Fulland of Water and Light.”
And now Bushiroad Games has officially announced the game for the Nintendo Switch console. Although a release date and gameplay details have yet to be revealed, it was specified that the game will be an action RPG.
Described as offering “overflowing memories of love that transcend time” Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Fulland of Water and Light will feature an original story crafted by the author himself, Fujino Omori and with a slogan like that I sure do expect some worthwhile fanservice to really fluff the action RPG,.
Though I am rather perplexed by the lack of announcement for the PC though I’m not entirely concerned by that as I am more than happy to emulate.
