Nitroplus still make games?
CyberAgent, the parent company of Cygames, announced the acquisition of game developer Nitroplus on June 26. The company acquired over 72.5% of Nitroplus’ shares for ¥16.9 billion, approximately $105.34 million USD, making Nitroplus a consolidated subsidiary of CyberAgent.
Nitroplus, founded in 1999, is celebrated for its distinctively dark visual novels and games. Among its standout titles are collaborations like “Steins;Gate” and “Chaos;Head” with 5pb., and its partnership with Type-Moon for the acclaimed Fate/Zero series.
The company’s innovative storytelling and gameplay have garnered it a dedicated fanbase and significant acclaim in the gaming industry.
However, in recent years, Nitroplus has transitioned into more of a shell company. Since its founding, Nitroplus consistently released titles annually until 2016 with “Tokyo Necro.” Subsequently, releases from Nitroplus have become sporadic, with “Minikui Mojika no Ko” in 2018 and the mobile game “Smile of the Arsnotoria” in 2021 and their upcoming “Rusty Rabbit,” scheduled for release on September 24, 2024.
CyberAgent founded Cygames in 2011, known for developing hit games like “Rage of Bahamut” and “Granblue Fantasy.” Expanding into anime, Cygames launched its anime division in March 2015 and Cygames Pictures in April 2016.
They have adapted several game titles into successful anime series, including “Rage of Bahamut Genesis,” “Princess Connect! Re:Dive” and “Uma Musume: Pretty Derby,” the latter of which was recently penned for receiving a western release for its ever popular mobile gacha game.
In a statement from Nitroplus’ CEO Takaki Kosaka, the company emphasizes retaining its identity, culture, and creative autonomy under CyberAgent’s ownership. Kosaka returns as CEO, with Gen Urobuchi, famed for “Saya no Uta,” remaining as vice-president.
Interestingly enough, it was Nitroplus who initiated the acquisition talks with CyberAgent.
Seeking financial collaboration with CyberAgent, Kosaka aims to strengthen Nitroplus’ management capabilities and refocus on content creation. The CEO is confident that this partnership will enhance Nitroplus’ game quality and enable the pursuit of projects previously sidelined due to resource constraints.
In return, CyberAgent holds high expectations for Nitroplus’ potential in intellectual property creation. Considering Cygames’ success with “Uma Musume: Pretty Derby,” which alone grossed over $2.4 billion in Asia from its mobile game. With CyberAgent’s extensive pockets and support, Nitroplus can regain its industry prominence and overcome the near decade long of stagnation that has held them back.
