I cannot wait for the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER Ti.
According to hongxing2020, a notorious hardware leaker with a fairly solid track record has hinted at the possibility of NVIDIA introducing a “SUPER” refresh of its RTX 4000 “ADA Lovelace” GeForce GPUs.
The tweet mentions the possibility of an RTX 4070 SUPER, RTX 4070 Ti SUPER and the 4080 SUPER.
It has long been speculated that NVIDIA would be introducing what would be essentially the “RTX 4080 Ti” sometime early next year, potentially for the same price even as the current RTX 4080 but I highly doubt that, NVIDIA CEO, Jensen Huang loves to help himself to consumer wallets.
ADA Lovelace has been quite a flawed generation if I’m being honest, the only graphics card amongst the lineup actually worthwhile to buy is the RTX 4090, it stands alone as the gaming performance king but good luck procuring one of your own for less than $1700 USD.
The RTX 4080 and below however aren’t what they seem, they are all utilizing cores effectively meant for lower end SKUs, the RTX 4080 is utilizing the AD103 core, a first for NVIDIA, at just 379mm² the RTX 4080 is seemingly left on its lonesome with just 59% of the CUDA cores featured on the aforementioned RTX 4090.
It doesn’t deserve to be called an 80-series class product full stop.
It only gets worse from there, the RTX 4080 12GB was repackaged as the RTX 4070 Ti, which makes full usage of the AD104 core (294 mm²) while the supposedly mid-range RTX 4070 receives a 23% reduction in CUDA cores compared to the Ti, or hilariously only 36% of the cores as found on a 4090.
While the RTX 4060 Ti features a retarded segmentation between 8GB and 16GB models, priced $100 apart. The graphics card itself is a slight cutdown of the AD106 core (188 mm²) with just 4352 / 4608 CUDA cores while the embarrassment known as the RTX 4060 is utilizing the AD107 core (159 mm²) which otherwise is normally reserved for a 50 class product, not a 60 series GPU.
Call it what you want, artificial segmentation or simple greed, NVIDIA has purposefully upsold consumers on effectively lower end hardware marketed as SKUs a tier above what they aught to be actually considered, while AMD offers superior performance and value across the entire lineup excluding the likes of the RTX 4090, there is simply no real need to introduce further segmentation lower down the totem pole outside of the monumental 30+ percent performance gap between the GeForce RTX 4080 and RTX 4090.
The notion of NVIDIA releasing various graphics cards with the “SUPER” suffice marked as both the RTX 4070 Super and 4070 Ti Super is asinine.
It would be simply cut and dry profiteering at this stage, but they’re known to do stupid things such as this which is why we have the RTX 3080, 3080 Ti, 3090 and 3090 Ti all utilizing the same GA102 core with a ~15% performance variance from top to bottom.
The leak suggests that NVIDIA might introduce a new variant called the Ti SUPER, which deviates from their usual naming conventions. In the past, the “Ti” designation indicated a higher-spec model released at any time.
With the RTX 40 series, we have seen the RTX 4070 Ti and RTX 4060 Ti models released shortly after their non-Ti counterparts. On the other hand, the “SUPER” label was typically used for mid-series updates when NVIDIA aimed to refresh multiple SKUs, as is the case here.
NVIDIA loves segmenting graphics cards to plug marginal performance gaps, of which there’s a <20% variance in performance between the RTX 4070 Ti and the RTX 4080, of which the RTX 4070 Ti SUPER would more than likely come as a cut down GA103 product and may possibly come with around 8704 CUDA cores to effectively split the 4070 Ti and 4080 by the tune of less than 10%.
There’s also a ~15% performance gap between the standard RTX 4070 and the RTX 4070 Ti, a potential RTX 4070 SUPER would also bridge that performance gap by the sum of around 10% by featuring a CUDA core count of around 6912.
Given how the RTX 4080 costs $1200, the 4070 Ti costs $800 and the standard 4070 costs $600, NVIDIA would actually gain solid press if they were to introduce these new SUPER variants at the same price points while also slashing the prices of the standard cards, doing so would probably swing favor towards NVIDIA towards some consumers who were planning to skip this generation.
NVIDIA would also leverage these SUPER variants in the lower class segments as they’d finally be able to provide meanwhile competition to the likes of AMD’s Radeon RX 7700 XT, 7800 XT which completely dominates the 4070 for $100 less and AMD’s 7900 XT which is giving the RTX 4070 Ti a major headache despite also costing $800.
NVIDIA are in desperate need of actually producing competitive products versus cheaper AMD Radeon counterparts, with various rumors circulating that the RTX 4080 Super / Ti could potentially come packing 20GB of GDDR6X memory albeit with a cucked memory bus width and bandwidth to go along with the drop in total CUDA cores.
But genuinely all I really care for is the potentiality of a cut down AD102 class product labeled as the RTX 4080 SUPER or 4080 Ti, either way is fine by me, NVIDIA are getting curb stomped in terms of outright performance and specifications with the $1200 RTX 4080 versus AMD’s flagship Radeon RX 7900 XT which isn’t only faster than the GeForce but it achieves this while being over $200 cheaper.
I honestly doubt NVIDIA are generous enough to either give these SUPER variants a fuck load more VRAM as opposed to their generic counterparts as they are merely bridging a performance gap of around 15% slotting themselves in-between already segmented products seems entirely useless but I digress, the best case scenario would be that NVIDIA prices them exactly the same as the graphics cards they are effectively “replacing” allowing the likes of the 4070, 4070 Ti and 4080 to have their prices slashed.
While no other credible leaker has mentioned the potential of an ADA Lovelace refresh so far, it’s possible that more information will surface over the coming months if it is indeed true. As of now, the specific specifications and release date remain undisclosed, so it would be premature to get excited over these details at the moment.
In other words, NVIDIA are about ready to release the real GeForce RTX 4080.
