Notepad++, the widely-used open-source text editor, has landed in the spotlight—not for groundbreaking features or technical improvements, but for its developer’s controversial decision to use the platform as a vessel to promote personal ideological views rather than addressing these issues directly.
The latest release, provocatively titled “In a world of Elon, be a Zelensky”, has sparked considerable online backlash. Adding fuel to the fire, the developer also announced a public shift from Elon Musk’s Twitter to Bluesky, framing the move as a rejection of Musk’s leadership and platform, further amplifying the divisive narrative surrounding the release.
This isn’t the first instance of Notepad++ venturing into political territory. Developer Don Ho has a track record of using software updates as a platform for personal commentary, usually in support of the likes of Hong Kong and Tibet, blending his political views with the evolution of the application. However, the choice to label a release as “anti-Elon Musk” by contrasting Musk with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky marks a particularly bold and polarizing step in this ongoing approach.
The release note for version 8.7.2, available on the official Notepad++ site, criticizes Musk’s actions and decisions, subtly framing them as counterproductive to a free and open society.
By contrast, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is heralded as a figure of resilience and leadership, Ho’s latest comments appear rooted in Musk’s growing alignment with divisive figures like President Donald Trump, positioning Musk as a symbol of the antithesis of leadership qualities Ho admires as he proclaims that he’s not against Trump but is purely against fascism, racism and misogyny, labeling Donald Trump as a product of American populism rebounding in a left wing environment and therefore all of his supporters are racist fascists.
Marketing software through polarizing political stances is becoming an increasingly common trend, as developers seek to align their projects with social and political issues. While some view this boldness as a form of activism, others are growing frustrated with political messaging permeating everything, from escapist entertainment to widely used free programs that users rely on daily.
For many, such platforms should remain apolitical, raising concerns that these overtly political updates could alienate donors, especially given that Notepad++ is entirely dependent on donations for its sustainability.
The developer’s announcement of leaving X (formerly Twitter) for Bluesky underscores a broader movement of public figures distancing themselves from Elon Musk’s platform. While Bluesky is gaining popularity among left-leaning activists, its adoption by individuals like Don Ho reflects dissatisfaction with Musk’s management of X.
However, Bluesky is facing criticism for becoming echo chamber or rather a “hugbox” for left leaning political activists, attracting a highly polarized user base and further deepening divides.
Notepad++ remains a staple for developers and casual users alike, but its increasing politicization risks alienating those who prefer their software to remain neutral and apolitical. This bold approach, however pushes Notepad++ in the spotlight, ensuring it garners attention for all the wrong reasons.
The politically charged branding of Notepad++ raises broader questions about the intersection of personal beliefs and tech development. As software becomes a platform for social and political engagement, the boundaries between product utility and personal expression blur further.
For Notepad++, the real gamble is whether these stances will consolidate a community of like-minded supporters or tarnish its reputation as a practical, unbiased tool.
